When it comes to purchasing a gaming machine powerful enough to keep up with today’s high standards, making the right decision becomes a high priority. Both the PlayStation and a quality gaming PC provide enough power to run just about any modern game. So why is a decision between buying a PS or PC so difficult? Because each of them has their own set of benefits and shortcomings. While both are perfectly capable gaming machines, one is preferable to the other in certain circumstances.
Why I Prefer PC over PlayStation
Greater performance and graphics
The PlayStation is a powerhouse, but how will it hold up 5 years from now? All the components will be even more out of date. With a PC, if a game requires more memory, purchasing that part isn’t very expensive. A console may not keep up with some specification standards, but a PC is a part away from becoming a completely up-to-date gaming machine. In addition, a good PC can handle much higher graphics settings, which will make your game look greater than anything you’ve ever seen on a console. To be fair, the better graphics you want, the more cash you have to shell out. If you crave those high-end graphics, insane resolutions and frames per second, then it’s smart to lean towards buying a PC.
Better upgrade path
The PC is admittedly more expensive up front, but your upgrade path later is markedly easier. If you’re a budget gamer, you can probably run the same processor for up to six years, and the same graphics card for four to five years. In addition to being able to play many of the PlayStation games now, PCs are also capable of playing games with just about any version. Want to play MineCraft 1.6? There’s nothing stopping you from doing that. The one exception are the games that require you to get the latest update in order to play online. Besides those edge cases, backward compatibility becomes an afterthought. As hardware advances, PCs become even more flexible when it comes to certain game versions.
Sales and free-to-play games
If you are that kind of gamer who says to an old classic game -“Okay, but I don’t like classic games and/or I played all those games before.Well, good news!” It’s also cheaper to be a PC gamer when it comes to new titles. Our prices fall faster, go lower, and stay that way. If you own a PC, there’s a 99.99% chance you also have Steam. Steam provides steep discounts on many top notch games. If you utilize Steam summer sales, you can save loads of money. Money that can go towards upgrading your PC perhaps.
The vaunted Steam Sales comes to mind first, but it’s far from the only sale in town. GOG.com, Amazon, Green Man Gaming, Gamersgate, Humble—all of them run sales on the regular. You can easily amass a huge library of games on the cheap, more than making up for the cost of your hardware. Games on Steam can go as low as $2. Two dollars is around half the price of coffee! Games that are this cheap are surprisingly good. Even well-known games such as Battlefield can fall below the $10 range.
We could also talk at length about the mouse and keyboard, but we won’t. Suffice it to say: It’s more precise, more approachable (for new gamers), and more responsive than a controller. But there are so many console games on PCs nowadays, it’s only natural you want to play some of them with the original control scheme. Dark Souls comes to mind, as does Assassin’s Creed. These games just play better on a gamepad. Luckily, it’s easier than ever to connect an Xbox One controller or a DualShock 4 to your PC, either wired or with Bluetooth. And most games support controllers on the PC these days, especially the big multi-platform releases.
The PlayStation isn’t the only machine with exclusive games. Steam’s free to play games, and many others are designed to be played on a Piaf you only own a console, games like Dota 2 simply aren’t accessible (unless a console version is made). In some cases, games can only be played on the PC. Common cases are games that are meant to be played with a keyboard and a mouse. A mouse gives you the control that a DualShock 4 controller can’t. It’s worth noting that you can plug a keyboard and mouse into a PlayStation 4, but it’s not very common to play games with this type of setup.
Online multiplayer gaming is free
For a lot of gamers this is a big one. Ever since the introduction of Xbox Live, console gamers have been paying to play online. PlayStation Network soon joined the ranks of pay-to-play online services and the majority of console gamers now have to live with it. PC gaming, on the other hand, has never charged its gamers to game online. And just to be clear, we’re not talking about MMO’s. We’re talking about single-player games with online multiplayer or games that are strictly only competitive online multiplayer. So if you plan to play games like Overwatch on the console, you have to pay to get online. But with PC gaming you don’t.
PC game modding
Modding your favorite games is the most fun you can have. In case you don’t know what a mod is, “mod” is short for modification. You use mods to add features to a game that weren’t intended to be added by the original developers. Mods are often developed by normal gamers like you that felt like a game was missing a certain function or feature. Modding is much more common on a PC because computers are run by programming languages. If you know a programming language, you can basically change anything you want about a game, all you have to do is a reverse engineer. However, you don’t have to know a programming language to enjoy mods. Many passionate gamers have already created many mods that you can freely use. And most of them are lots of fun. You never know what kind of mods you can find in the PC gaming world. There’s always room for something new. Plus, mods greatly extend the life of a game.
Overall I would like to say why one should choose PC over PlayStation. If
You don’t mind spending the extra money for greater performance
than PlayStation exclusives. If You prefer a keyboard/mouse setup over a controller (but you can still use a controller). For video game customization options (especially with graphics) or free online multiplayer gaming (like in Battlefront, Call of Duty, etc.) You can use them. Beside this, if You want to be able to upgrade your hardware at any time or You want Oculus Rift/HTC Vive This is the best option to go with for any gamer.
